Cats may be animals, but so many centuries of serving as domesticated pets has spoiled them. Cats today have become much more sensitive to the wild than the rest of the animal kingdom. Fleas, ticks, and other critters can quickly and quietly become a serious problem if your cat is outside often.

Do not feed your cat any kind of human food that contains bones in it. If you are giving your cat chicken or fish, be sure to remove the bones beforehand to prevent a choking hazard. Chop the food that you serve into small bits to make it easier to digest for your cat.

If you don’t want your cat to scratch up furniture, try filling a small spray bottle with water and spritzing your cat whenever he tries. Cats generally avoid water altogether for reasons no one is sure about, so he will not like this. Eventually he will stop scratching to avoid getting sprayed.

If you want to have your cat for many years, it is a good idea to keep them indoors. While a cat may enjoy going outside, it is statistically proven that outdoor cats live shorter lives than indoor cats. There are dangers to a cat that spends time outside, not least of all other animals.

Be careful if you leave a kitten with a young child. This is especially true if your child is less than five years old. Their immaturity prevents them from understanding how easily they could hurt the kitten. When children are over the age of five, then you should decide whether or not they are mature enough to handle a kitten.

Put the right amount of cat litter in the litter box. Some people try to get out of cleaning the box by putting too much litter in there. Cats don’t like walking on sand dunes! Two inches or so should be sufficient for the cat’s needs, and you just have to be vigilant about cleaning the box out.

Take time to train your cat to go into a car carrier. Cats do not respond in the same way dogs do to punishment. They like responding to encouragement better. Take their favorite blanket and place it within the carrier. Then leave the carrier with the door ajar in a frequented spot. Over time, the cat will feel comfortable and go inside the carrier. Let it happen naturally or with only mild coaxing. Do not get angry. As the cat becomes used to being in the carrier, it will become easier to transport them in it.

If you plan to add a second cat to your household, be sure to allow two to three weeks for your resident cat and the new cat to get used to each other. Two cats may fight, hiss, or hide from each other until they become more comfortable. After the initial period though, they should start to settle and begin to get along like old friends.

Provide safe and engaging entertainment for your cat at all times. Even if you cannot be in the house with your pet, you should ensure that it has access to toys and other diversions. Sometimes we perceive that cats are lazy animals, but that doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy playing to pass the time. This is especially important if your cat is alone in your house for long periods of time.

Make sure your cat gets plenty of opportunities to play. Just like playtime is important for other types of pets, the same holds true for your cat, despite whatever their age happens to be. A cats energy might fade over time, but that does not mean that it no longer likes to play. Spend some time enjoying your cat.

If your cat has bad breath, a trip to the vet is in order. Bad breath in cats can be a red flag for tooth decay or more serious conditions. These include diabetes, stomach problems and lung disorders. So, if your cat’s breath smells worse than the food he eats, get to the bottom of the issue before it gets out of control.

If your cat has been scratching things that they should not have, do not think of declawing them as a good way to deal with the issue. While this surgical procedure would stop them from causing any more damage, it is a very painful procedure and it is pretty difficult to recover from.

Any difference in the environment of your home is easily detected by the keen sense of smell that your cat possesses. This can cause problems when making changes in diet and surroundings. Don’t let this discourage you. Your cat will begin using it as soon as he is used to its smell.

If you are a responsible pet owner, you need to keep your cat indoors. The outdoors is no place for your pet. There are lots of dangers out in the world. Your cat can be injured by wild animals, hit by a car or get infested with bugs and diseases if you let them roam free.

Think about keeping your cat primarily inside the house. Outdoor cats usually do not live as long, and they are at higher risk in contracting many diseases. Your family could get these too. Indoor cats do fine with a sunny window where he can safely view the outdoors without all the risks.

The outside world doesn’t need to be a scary place for you or your cat. These tips should help keep your new pet safe from infections, poisonous wildlife, and other dangerous animals. If your cat can’t seem to escape some constant disturbance outside, it may need to spend more time indoors instead.
